Academy provides area's oldest martial arts studio

Prof. Phillip M. Skornia, long trained and certified to teach Olympic qualifying Karate has opened the first Olympic Training Center in the South Bay at the Academy of Judo & Karate.

Around since 1955, The Academy of Judo & Karate is South Bay's oldest and most  highly respected martial arts school.  Master Skornia, an 8th degree Black Belt, is the chief instructor.

Skornia, who has been training in martial arts for 40 years, was just recently promoted to 8th dan Black Belt in Shorinji Zendo-ryu Karate by the International Traditional Karate Federation, and so earned a world record by being the first non-Oriental Karate Master in history to be so honored.

The school's Aikido Club is taught by Sensei Shibata, 6th dan Black Belt, one of the highest ranked Aikido masters in the United Sates.  The Jujitsu Club is headed by Sensei Fox, 6th degree Black Belt, with over 30 years experience in the United States.

In addition, the Academy of Judo & Karate has taught more women than any other school.  Two dedicated Black Belt instructors, Susan Taxter and Mary Ann Gardner, school teachers by trade, have just been promoted to 2nd degree Black Belt.

The Academy is located at 2703 Artesia Blvd., Redondo Beach, California; call (310) 370-3553 by appointment.
